North Herts Farmers Grain Ltd
History
After long careers in the grain trade with Eastern County Farmers and Sherriff Grain, Mike Sheppard and John East founded the grain company in 1991, offering the membership of North Herts Farmers professional grain marketing services with the ethos of a co-operative.
Their aim at the time, and one that holds true today, was to bring growers and consumers of grain closer together for mutual benefit. Building deep, long-term relationships with domestic customers, making markets for all grades of combinable crops. There has always been a strong emphasis on customer service and looking after growers interests.
The volumes handled by the business continued to grow and the team expanded with Martin joining in 1997, Marie in 2010, Jason in 2012, Faye in 2016, Richard and Jacob in 2017 and Kim in 2025. Mike remains a Director of the company to this day.
Grain
We aim to provide individual, bespoke and flexible grain marketing advice to both consumers and growers, acknowledging that every business has different requirements with different attitudes to risk and reward.
We trade all qualities of wheat, barley, oats, oilseed rape, linseed, peas and beans with most crops having been sampled and tested by us before purchase. Understanding end users requirements and knowing what ex farm quality is like ensures that the right thing is delivered to the right place first time as often as possible.
The crops traded by the company aren’t homogenous, and if a problem on delivery arises it is fully dealt with in the best interests of the grower.

We are happy to help with any aspect of combinable crop marketing and work closely with professional local service providers for haulage, storage and grain store facilities. We are happy to help with varietal choices, cropping choices, marketing and cash flow plans, storage solutions and sampling.
